Germany's Opportunity Card: one year to find work

Germany launched a new visa that lets skilled workers search for jobs for a year without a job offer—a major shift in how the country recruits talent.

Germany introduced the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) to attract skilled workers from outside the EU. The visa lets you move to Germany and search for a job for up to one year without needing an employer to sponsor you first. This is a real change: most work visas require a job offer before you arrive.

You'll need to meet a points-based system that considers factors like professional qualifications, language skills, and work experience. The card is designed for people with vocational training or a university degree. Once you find an employer willing to hire you, you can transition to a standard work visa.

You can move to Germany and search for work for a year without a job offer already lined up.

The appeal is obvious: you can explore the job market, network, and learn German without the pressure of securing employment before you leave home. Germany faces real labor shortages in skilled trades and healthcare, so they're serious about this. If you're considering Germany and have credentials, this removes one major barrier. Check the official requirements on the German Federal Foreign Office website—the points system and income thresholds are specific.
