EU considers extending 90-day rule for remote workers

The European Union is exploring a plan to extend the 90-day visa-free stay for certain non-EU remote workers and digital nomads.

The European Union is considering a proposal to extend the standard 90-day visa-free stay for non-EU citizens who are remote workers or digital nomads. Currently, the Schengen 90/180 rule allows most third-country nationals to stay visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day period; the proposal would carve out a longer window for those with proof of remote employment or self-employment income.

This is significant if you're a digital nomad or remote worker from outside the EU planning extended stays in Europe. An extended window would reduce the logistical burden of visa runs or the need to apply for a formal digital nomad visa in individual countries. However, the proposal is still in discussion, and implementation timelines are uncertain.

A longer visa-free window for remote workers could reshape how digital nomads move through Europe.

For now, continue planning around the 90/180 rule and the digital nomad visas already available in countries like Portugal, Estonia, and Spain. If the EU extension passes, it will simplify your options, but don't count on it yet. Monitor official EU announcements and your country's immigration authority for updates.
